The best places for food and drink in Gdańsk, Poland

I love travelling to this incredible city, and I know in my mind I will be back again. I don’t know what it is about the place, but it just feels like home. There are so many amazing restaurants and bars here. If you are anything like us, we love finding fancy, quirky and interesting places too. This will be another blog we update as we travel. Here are some of the best places for food and drink in Gdańsk.

PIEROGARNIA MANDU

One of the best places for Pierogi here in Gdańsk. Sometimes, it’s hard to find a table. An amazing selection of wet dumplings, baked, savoury and sweet. Prices are reasonable, you can see them make them through a small window too. Service is brilliant. Address: Elżbietańska 4/8, 80-894.

PIEROGARNIA STARY MŁYN

Another amazing place for Pierogi. I had my first ever baked pierogi, more like a pasty, with a short pastry here. It was delicious, and I was hooked. I had the ones stuffed with roast pork, carrots, and onions. And wow, they were so filling. I recommend them with the honey-mustard sauce. These things are incredible, I have since tried several flavours. Address: Świętego Ducha 64.

PYRA BAR

If you love spuds, then the Pyra Bar is for you. All things potatoes including pancakes, fries, dumplings, bakes, jackets and local and regional specialities. So far, there are only three restaurants in Poland, here in Gdańsk, Poznań which we have visited and Gdynia. Hearty, filling and full of flavour. I would like to recommend just one thing to try, but seriously, the food here is so good, try everything! Address: Garbary 6/7.

Baba od rzeźnika, ‘The Butchers Woman’, potato cake with bacon, pork neck, onion, parsley, chives, mushrooms, cream.

SURF BURGER GARNCARSKA

One of our favourite things to eat is a good burger. It doesn’t matter where we travel to, we always try to seek out the best burger joints. Surf Burger is up there as one of the best in Gdańsk. Vicky is partial to a juicy chicken burger, whereas I’m all about the beef! A small menu, with a great selection of flavours, we also highly recommend the locally brewed melon beer to swill it down with, and the truffle fries. Search out Surf Burger here, Garncarska 30.

RESTAURACJA GVARA

A really lovely restaurant right next door to Saint Mary’s Church. If you are looking for something a bit more fancy, then we recommend a visit to this to this place. Friendly staff, a delicious seasonal menu and a great selection of drinks. Address: Chlebnicka 48/51.

BAR MLECZNY STAGIEWNA

Milk Bars, selling traditional Polish fayre. Usually really cheap places to eat serving the best in traditional hearty, homely cooking. You can still find several in towns and cities across the country. Here is Gdańsk is no different. We recommend this one, which you can find at Stągiewna 15.

A bar mleczny is a Polish cafeteria which during the Communist era provided government-subsidized traditional Polish cuisine at low cost. The name comes from cheese cutlets, which were often sold when meat was rare.

DOBRA PACZKARNIA

Dobra Pączkarnia, the good donut shop, is one of my absolute favourite places in Gdańsk, and Poland, for a sweet fix. They have several stores throughout the country, including Warsaw, Kraków, and Poznań, where I have also indulged. I usually have these for breakfast. I grab a takeout coffee and then find the nearest shop. Address: Plac Dominikański 1.

CUKIERNIA W-Z

You will see these words on shop signs and windows all over Poland, (Piekarnia) bakery, and (Cukiernia) cake shop, pastries, sweets. We are big fans of Polish baking and love venturing into these stores when we travel. Donuts, cakes with jelly, cakes full of cream, and Polish bread are delicious. Cukiernia W-Z you will find at Słodowników 1. It doesn’t look much from the outside, but don’t let that put you off, as it is always busy and full of locals.

SZYDŁOWSKI BAKERY

Another fave of ours for grabbing a coffee and something sweet lives on the corner of Długa street and Tkacka street is Szydłowski Bakery. Perfect for people watching on the main street with a massive selection of cakes and sweet treats.

FLISAK ’76

Flisak is one of our favourite places for a cocktail in Gdańsk. The menu and bar are both themed for the drinks they serve, and occasionally, this changes. A complete revamp of the menu, and the bar, so the theme runs throughout. During our first visit, the theme was fairytales. The drinks were all based on famous fairytales and stories like Snow White, Pinocchio, Aladdin, and Alice in Wonderland, etc.

The menu was a pop-up book, with a brief list of ingredients. Once the bartender makes your drink, they bring it across to your table, and then they present you with a show, a description of the cocktail, and a story to go with it.

We can’t recommend this bar enough, for a completely unique experience. Also, at the time of writing this post, they have changed the theme again to ‘The Greatest Show’. Circus themed cocktails, menu and decor. We are already trying to find time to go back and visit, just for this.

CRAFT COCKTAILS

A short stumble away from Lumi Shor bar, and on the same street are Craft Cocktails. A really cosy vibe and an amazing selection of cocktails. Make sure you add this as part of your bar crawl. Craft Cocktails is guaranteed to not disappoint you. Find them at Piwna 56/1.

LUMI SHOT BAR

Shots with sweets, shots with cream, flaming shots, colourful shots, spicy and strong. These guys have them all. A massive menu to choose from. Shot bars like this seem to be quite popular in Poland, as we have drank at similar in Kraków and Poznań. They do Absinth towers, flight boards and all kinds of specially presented shots. What would you choose? Let us know in the comments below. You can find these guys down some steps, in a basement at Piwna 52.

CYBERMACHINA

One for the video game nerds like myself. A quirky theme bar with a cocktail menu based on game characters and references. There are board games to play and a handful of games console stations to sit and enjoy. You can find Cybermachina at Okopowa 7.

GATSBY GDAŃSK, COCKTAIL & WHISKY BAR

Another fab cocktails bar with an outstanding relaxed 1920s Art déco vibe is Gatsby. Bartenders flaring cocktails and modern songs with a 1920s twist make this a great stop for a night out in Gdańsk. They also have an enormous selection of whiskey if you’re a fan of that. Address: Chlebnicka 37/38.

FOOD & DRINK IN SOPOT

I am adding Sopot here, as Sopot and Gdynia make up the tri-state area of this region, which includes Gdańsk. All are a short distance from each other, so think of these as bonus suggestions should you visit.

KAISER PATISSERIE

Another fantastic pastry, cakes and bakes place. They serve delicate cakes, chocolates, macarons and more. Perfect for a sweet breakfast treat or just for a sugar fix throughout the day. Delicious coffee, and open from 9am until 8pm. Find them at Powstańców Warszawy 19.

PIEROGARNIA JURTA

During our visit to Sopot, we were struggling to find somewhere to eat. We knew we wanted something Polish, traditional, but we just couldn’t find anywhere we thought looked decent. Until we accidentally found Pierogarnia Jurta. We are so happy we did. A great little menu, no English descriptions, so I had to bust out the translator. We shared a plate of delicious wet dumplings, and we decided to get two dumplings that were made with some kind of pancake. They were incredible.

Jurta is a short distance out of the centre of town, but the food was so delicious, it is worth the walk. Address: Grunwaldzka 67.
