## HISTORY OF THE PASTEL DE NATA

Pastel de nata, or Pastéis de Nata, is Portugal's world-famous custard tart. But where does it originate from?

The story of the pastel de nata begins in the early 1800s at the Jerónimos Monastery in the Belém area of Lisbon. Monks used egg whites to help starch their clothes, leaving them with lots of leftover yolks. Instead of throwing them away, they turned them into desserts, including what would eventually become the famous pastel de nata.

Religious groups were dissolved in Portugal in the 1830s, and the monks sold the recipe to a nearby sugar refinery. In 1837, the owners opened a bakery using the monastery’s recipe. The bakery, Pastéis de Belém, still exists today and still serves its version of the pastry, although the recipe is a closely guarded secret.

Pastel de nata are sold way beyond Lisbon and are now a much-loved treat across the country and around the world. Eat them warm or cold with a dash of cinnamon or on their own with a nice strong coffee for breakfast or a snack. Anyway, enough waffling; let's get stuck in!

## MANTEIGARIA

One of the most famous places in Porto for pastel de nata is Manteigaria, and it lives up to its reputation. One of our favourites. Crisp and flaky, with a creamy centre and a good caramelised crust on the top, baked to perfection. Here you can watch them being made fresh behind the counter.

Price for a single pastel de nata: €1.50
Location: There are four locations in Porto: Lgo de S. Domingos 80, Rua dos Clérigos 37, R. de Alexandre Braga 24, and R. de Santa Catarina 357.

## CASTRO - ATELIER DE PASTÉIS DE NATA

Castro is often mentioned as one of the best spots in Porto and Portugal for Nata. After trying one, I can see why. Another crispy, flaky pastry, and the custard has a deep, rich, sweet vanilla flavour. This was another of our favourites, and we visited on more than one occasion.

Price for a single pastel de nata: €1.70
Location: R. de Mouzinho da Silveira 61.

## FÁBRICA DA NATA

Located in Porto’s main shopping district, this is a great place to stop while exploring downtown. The custard is rich and creamy, and the layered shell has just the right amount of crunch.

Price for a single pastel de nata: €1.40
Locations: Praça de Almeida Garrett 7 and São Bento 305.

## NATA SWEET NATA

We stumbled upon Nata Sweet Nata by accident; not even hungry, we still had to pop in and try another one. Deep yellow custard, a lovely dark top, and slightly softer pastry, but still a very good sweet egg taste, reminded me of what we call an egg custard pie, with a harder biscuit-like crust at home in England. Delicious!

Price for a single pastel de nata: €1.60
Locations: Cais da Ribeira 18 and R. de 31 de Janeiro 106.

## CONFEITARIA DO BOLHÃO

You will find this very traditional bakery founded in 1896 opposite Mercado do Bolhão. Not only do they sell sensational pastéis de nata, but they also stock dozens of delicious-looking cakes, bakes and sandwiches.

Price for a single pastel de nata: €1.50
Location: R. Formosa 339.

## NATAS D’OURO

If you are looking for a delicious twist on the traditional custard tart, then look no further than Natas d'Ouro. Here you will get sweet chocolate, lemon, orange and port wine versions as well as savoury chicken, fish, beef and more. We didn't fancy those ones to be honest, but we did have a selection of the sweet variety, and they were okay. Worth a try if you are looking for something a little different.

Price for a single pastel de nata: €1.50 for traditional, €1.60 for flavoured, and €2.50 for a savoury nata.
Location: Av. de Ramos Pinto 210 and R. do Bonjardim 128.

## PASTEL DE NATA ICE CREAM

If you are looking for something a little colder during the hot Portuguese summer, why not try a pastel de nata-flavoured ice cream? You will find this flavour at many parlours throughout the city. You can even buy flavoured alcoholic liquors if you fancy a tipple!

## OUR FAVOURITES

Of course, this is just a handful of the many shops in the city selling them; there will be many more small bakeries in the back streets and alleyways we never got a chance to find. Out of the places we ate at above, I’d recommend Manteigaria or Castro; they just hit differently. Really good and delicious hot or cold.

You could do your own pastry crawl. Walk the city and stop where the smell of hot, sweet custard pulls you in. We hope you have enjoyed this guide to where to eat the best pastel de nata in Porto. Is your mouth watering? Leave a comment below if you have indulged in this tasty custard pie, either here or somewhere else in Portugal. What bakery is your favourite?
